Google Cambodia domain – www.google.com.kh – was launched [late in November 2006], according to an online article Google sends New Year gift to Cambodia written by Global Voices. This was to allow Cambodian people to search for information in Khmer.

“ We launched the Google Cambodia domain …, along with a number of others, and are excited to bring new search functionality to users in Cambodia,” company spokesman Daniel Pastor wrote in an e-mail December 1 to The Cambodia Daily, a leading English newspaper in the country. “ [W]e offer as many country domains as possible, which let users restrict their search to their country’s domain (.kh in this case) or to the language in which they’re searching,” (Read full article by The Cambodia Daily)

A lot of work needs to be done in order for the Khmer language to work properly on the web, concluded Global Voices.

The newspaper reported representatives of Intel Corporation as saying in 2005 that only 12 percent of Cambodian people have access to the internet.
