Angkorian period was a most glory reign in Khmer history. It was an era of prosperity, so called the Golden Era of Khmer Kingdom. During that period, Cambodia was a world empire, Khmer Empire or Khmer Kingdom in term of cultural accomplishments and political power. Khmer Empire had ruled a large territory in Southeast Asia.

To reveal the glory royal historical path of the Golden Era of Khmer Kingdom, Angkor National Museum was built to be the one and only world class museum in Siem Reap that enhances the cultural heritage of the Golden Era of Khmer Kingdom by stocking collection of priceless artifacts and through state of the art multimedia technology exhibitions for a full picturesque legendary story in an easy understanding way. Beside, it is aimed to be an extraordinary inspiration site of art, culture and history of the ancient civilization legend.

By touring around the museum, visitors who have knowledge and visitors who do not have any knowledge of the ancient Khmer civilization will enjoy viewing the great exhibition, gallery and precious artifact collected by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and Apsara Authority. To make visitors understand easily the complete legendary story and the history of the Khmer Empire civilization, the 8 galleries have been designed.

  • Children whose height is less than 1.20 meters will obtain 50% discount

The Great Khmer Kings

History shows that there were four particularly notable Khmer kings who made the Khmer Empire one of the world’s greatest civilizations. They were the kings who ruled Cambodia during the Angkorian period, which lasted from the early 9th century to the 14th century. The Angkorian period was in terms of cultural accomplishments and political power. It was the most glory period, so called the Golden Age of Cambodia, in Khmer history. It was recognized as the greatness and territorial expansion period. The four great Khmer kings who made the Khmer Empire one of the world’s greatest civilizations were:

  • King Jayavarman II, the king who united the two kingdom of Chenla during the years 802-850.
  • King Yasovarman I, the king who established Angkor as the capital between the years 899-900.
  • King Soryavarman II, the king who built Angkor Wat between 1116-1145.
  • King Jayavarman VII, the king who built Angkor Thom between the years 1181-1201.
