Garden City, New York, USA – An US federal immigration official was accused of demanding sex from a 22-year-old Colombian woman, who is married to an American citizen, in exchange for a green card. Issac R. Baichu, 46, an adjudication office at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Garden City, was charged and arrested on corruption charges in 11 March 2008 after meeting with the women in their second dating.

According to the court documents, in the first meeting which took place in 21 December 2007, the woman had met Issac in his car, and he told her during the meeting that she needed to have sex with him in return for his assistance in her green card application. He threatened to hold up her application and even deport her relatives if she refused to have sex with him. With this threat, she gave in to one of his demand for oral sex because she was afraid. For the next meeting, he called and asked her to see him in a private meeting. However, she had used her mobile phone, which she hidden in her purse, to record the encounter and the conversation during the date . Days latter, she approached The New York Times and the district attorney’s office to tell the story with the recording. “ I want sex. One or two time. That’s all. You get your green card. You won’t have to see me anymore,” he said on the recording.

With this case, questions were raised about the vulnerability of the system to corruption. It was unofficially reported that, in USA, money, not sex, is the more common currency of corruption in immigration.
